As some may know, "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy is one of my favorite novels. The single most depressing novel I've ever read, but it's phenomenal. I've never read anything so beautiful, so poetic in its narration. I also haven't read many books that could affect me to my core like it did. Despite being a part of the very prolific post-apocalypse genre it is very much one of a kind.
And as many more of you might know, despite the fact that he's 32 years my senior, I will be marrying Viggo Mortensen at some point in time. I like to think he'd get over the awkwardness eventually.
So I had been waiting for this movie since it was announced a couple years ago and watching with more and more distress as it continuously got pushed back. So the second it became available at the cinema I work at I watched it.
It was everything I wanted it to be. Of course the magic of the narration could only go so far. But everything else was there. The gray landscapes were equal parts beautiful and terrifying. The acting was phenomenal and Viggo Mortensen's minimal acting style was made for his role as The Man. Most importantly it stuck with me. My friend and I threw a camping party and I ended up passing out by the fire in the dark. Despite the burning embers I had never been so cold in my life, as I lay there shaking I developed an understanding of both the book and the movie so much more, how it must feel to be so completely cold and lost. I couldn't get the film out of my head.
My aforementioned friend was a bit annoyed by The Wife and I had to explain to him that sometimes directors like to cast Viggo Mortensen in book adaptations where his love interest becomes considerably more predominant in a story despite only having a few pages in the source material. Not that I'm referring to anything...
The Road is still extremely limited, which is a damn shame because it was easily the best movie I've seen all year. Of course I'm biased, but a few of my friends who have not read the book nor convinced themselves that they were marrying Viggo Mortensen have agreed that it was at least one of the best films released this year. The second it becomes available in your area I suggest you see it.
